Chapter Eleven

Latsil:

For so long, I begged Brachard for permission to bring Tavri to the underground caves. It was always steadfastly denied. Yet in one fell swoop, the king has fallen under Joanna’s spell just like every other orc in the village and he utters an invitation without reservation.

No one but me ever trusted Tavri. How had I not seen that until now? And if I was that wrong about her, what else was I wrong about? After Brun’s death and immediate resurrection, I needed to get away. All I could think about was what if it had been me who’d issued the killing blow? The order for my death would have been immediate, and Joanna would have had to watch my execution and then spend the remainder of her days alone in an orc village I’d brought her to.

I’d give her Pegasus, of course. And all my funds and possessions, but they won’t last the rest of her life. Mayhap I’m doing her more harm than good by being such a greedy male sucking up all her attentions. And now? Knowing that I’ve never made good decisions, I can’t subject her to such a lacking fool as me. No, Joanna needs to go back to the humans where she can find a reasonable human man of her choosing, one who will worship her and give her the fruitful life that she deserves. Not waste her time on an ugly broken orc who can’t even make quality decisions. An orc so easily swayed by a pretty face that he put his entire village at risk.

My heart freezes midbeat. What if Tavri had bargained with the Blackhearts to invade the village? I am lucky that she just bargained for my capture. And for the first time, I fully acknowledge that is what happened. The orcs didn’t stumble upon me bathing in the river.

I distinctly remember Tavri telling me she would come sneak up on me and didn’t want any of those “vile weapons” marring my “beautiful body.” Aye, back then before the capture, I’d been a handsome male. More fool me, to fall for her trickery in letting me know in no uncertain terms to leave my weapons with my clothing on the bank. It was not so long ago that I stumbled upon Brun and his mate Hannah swimming in the creek. I brought them a blanket to dry off with, noticing even then that Brun wasn’t unprotected. He still had his dagger strapped to his thigh. I am the only idiot who did everything my mate asked, including leaving myself completely defenseless and exposed. Taking Bessica to task for slapping Tavri when Bessica could stand her drama no longer. Resenting Kreele for stepping in to defend his sister, saying she only had my best interests at heart. Resenting Terk for stepping in to settle things when Kreele and I fought. And then accusing Terk of favoring Bessica simply because I knew it would cause issues between Terk and Kreele.

Deep shame fills me over that.
